✓ Why this trip right now: North Cascades gets fewer than 10,000 visitors per month — one of the least visited parks in the country. International tourism bookings for US national parks are down 42% in 2026. Domestic interest is steady, but this loop avoids the parks that draw domestic crowds (Yellowstone, Glacier, Zion). Expect uncrowded trails, available lodging, and peak-season weather.
✈ Flights: SFO → SEA nonstop, 15+ flights daily on Alaska / United / Delta, ~$100–200 RT. Ultra-flexible — book whenever, even last-minute. This is a high-volume route so prices rarely spike.

🚗 SEA → Marblemount: ~2h (120 mi via I-5 + Hwy 20)
🚗
Scenic drive into the mountains
Highway 20 follows the Skagit River through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. Stop in the small town of Concrete for coffee. The landscape shifts from farmland to dense old-growth forest as you approach the park.
🍽
Dinner at the Buffalo Run Restaurant
Marblemount institution — buffalo burgers, elk chili, and local beers. One of the only restaurants in town. Casual, mountain-town vibe.
2
North Cascades scenic drive + Diablo Lake
Tuesday, August 4
Explore
🚗 Day-trip loop east on Hwy 20: ~60 mi round trip
Drive deeper into the park along Highway 20. This is one of the most scenic drives in Washington — turquoise lakes, glacier-capped peaks, old-growth forests. No entrance fee for North Cascades.
📸
Gorge Creek Falls overlook
Easy roadside stop. A 242-foot waterfall visible from a bridge. 5-minute walk from the car.
⛰
Diablo Lake overlook + Thunder Knob trail
Thunder Knob: 3.6 mi round trip · ~1.5h · 420 ft gain · Easy. Panoramic views of Diablo Lake's surreal turquoise water (glacier flour causes the color), Colonial Peak, and Pyramid Peak. One of the most photogenic spots in Washington.
📸
Ross Lake overlook
Quick roadside stop 5 miles further east. Views of the 23-mile-long reservoir backed by jagged peaks.
⛰
Rainy Lake trail
1.8 mi round trip · ~45 min · 50 ft gain · Paved, fully accessible. A gentle walk through forest to a misty alpine lake surrounded by waterfalls and cliffs. Absurdly easy for how beautiful it is.
🌲
Washington Pass overlook
If you drive a bit further east, this viewpoint has dramatic views of Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires. The road here carves through sheer granite walls. Turn around and head back west for dinner.

Skagit River rafting + Cascade River Road
Wednesday, August 5
Adventure
🌊
Morning: Skagit River rafting through North Cascades
Class II–III · ~4h including shuttle · 10 miles. Put-in at Goodell Creek Campground inside the park. Emerald-green glacial water flowing through old-growth forest. Family-friendly with one exciting Class III section (S-Bends). August is the best month for this — warmer water, sunny weather, reliable flows from the dam-fed lakes.
Outfitters: Alpine Adventures (~$79/person, 10am or 3pm departures), Orion River Expeditions, Cascadia Rafting, North Cascades River Expeditions. All operate under National Park permits.
⛰
Afternoon option: Cascade River Road + easy walk
Drive the Cascade River Road (23 miles, paved/gravel) south of Marblemount. Increasingly dramatic mountain views. At the end, the Cascade Pass trailhead area has short walks with big alpine views. The full Cascade Pass hike is 7.4 mi (too long), but even the first mile is rewarding.
🍽
Farewell dinner in Marblemount
Buffalo Run again, or drive 30 minutes west to Concrete for North Cascades Brewing if you want variety.
Phase 2 — Leavenworth
2 nights in the Bavarian village · Wed–Fri
4
Scenic drive over the Cascades to Leavenworth
Thursday, August 6
Transfer
🚗 Marblemount → Leavenworth: ~2.5h (130 mi via Hwy 20 east)
This is one of the best driving days of the trip. Highway 20 crosses the North Cascades at Washington Pass and Rainy Pass, then descends through the Methow Valley into the dry, sunny east side of the Cascades. The landscape transforms from dense rainforest to open ponderosa pine and golden hills. Continue south to Leavenworth — a Bavarian-themed mountain village that's genuinely charming, not kitschy.
📸
Scenic stops en route
Washington Pass: Pull off for Liberty Bell views (if you didn't yesterday). Methow Valley: Open ranch country, wildflowers. Winthrop: Optional stop — Old West-themed town with good lunch spots and galleries. Drive time adds ~30 min.
🏘
Arrive in Leavenworth, explore the village
Walk Front Street — beer gardens, gelato, wine tasting rooms, nutcracker museum. Dinner at München Haus (outdoor biergarten with bratwurst and pretzels) or Watershed Café (modern PNW cuisine). The Wenatchee River runs right through town — beautiful in the evening light.
5
Icicle Gorge hike + village day
Friday, August 7
Explore
🚗 Icicle Creek Road: 20 min from Leavenworth
A relaxed day mixing a morning hike with village time. Leavenworth in August is warm and sunny — east-slope Cascades weather, very different from the west side.
⛰
Icicle Gorge Loop trail
4 mi loop · ~1.5–2h · Flat · Easy. An interpretive loop through old-growth forest along Icicle Creek. Wildflowers, footbridges, swimming holes. Shaded and cool — perfect for a warm August morning. Trailhead 20 min up Icicle Creek Road.
🌊
Optional: Wenatchee River rafting (if still running)
Class III · Half-day · $85–94/person. The Wenatchee rafting season typically winds down by late July or early August depending on snowpack. Call outfitters to confirm: Blue Sky Outfitters (509-548-1600), Orion Expeditions, Alpine Adventures, River Recreation. If the Wenatchee is done for the season, you already rafted the Skagit — and you can tube the Wenatchee instead (gentler but still fun).
🍽
Afternoon & evening in the village
Browse Front Street shops. Wine tasting at Silvara Cellars or Boudreaux Cellars. Icicle Brewing Company for craft beer. Dinner at South (upscale Southern/PNW fusion) or Andreas Keller (German, underground beer hall). If it's Thursday, the Leavenworth Summer Theater runs shows in the park — check schedule.

Saturday, August 8
Rainier
🚗 Leavenworth → Ashford (Rainier): ~3h (160 mi via I-90 + Hwy 7)

⛰
Skyline Trail loop at Paradise (short version)
2.5 mi loop to Myrtle Falls and Panorama Point · ~1.5–2h · 900 ft gain · Moderate. Wildflower meadows in full bloom in early August, with Mt. Rainier looming directly above. Mountain views, marmots everywhere, Myrtle Falls is stunning. Start at the Jackson Visitor Center. Go on a weekday if possible — Paradise parking fills by 10am on summer weekends.
📸
Reflection Lakes
5-minute drive from Paradise on Stevens Canyon Road. When conditions are calm, the mountain reflects perfectly in the lake. Best light early morning or late afternoon. Short walk from the car.
🍽
Dinner in Ashford
Wildberry Restaurant (local comfort food, huckleberry pie), Copper Creek Inn (historic lodge restaurant since 1946), or Ex Nihilo Brewing in Elbe.
