Old Town Sq / Charles Bridge — pickpocket hotspot
Wenceslas Sq — rowdy at night
Main Train Station park — avoid after dark
Very Safe
Prague has no real dangerous neighborhoods for tourists. The main risks are pickpockets and scams:

Old Town Square & Charles Bridge — highest pickpocket density. The Astronomical Clock crowd is a prime target. Keep bags zipped and in front.

Wenceslas Square (south end) — nightlife district with late-night rowdiness. Avoid Dlouhá St. bar crawls.

Hlavní nádraží (Main Station) park — nicknamed "Sherwood Forest." Gathering spot for homeless/addicts. Fine inside the station; avoid the park at night.
Tram 22/23 to Prague Castle is a known pickpocket route. Use Bolt/Uber instead of street taxis.
Local events during your stay (Jun 13–17)

Ride-hailing apps
🥇 Bolt 🥈 Uber 🥉 Liftago
✅ Uber is the official taxi service at Prague Airport. Bolt is ~20-30% cheaper. Liftago is a quality local app with licensed drivers & child seats. Lyft is not available.
Don't miss
01 Prague Castle + St. Vitus Cathedral — largest ancient castle complex in the world. Go early morning to beat crowds.
02 Old Town Square at dawn or dusk — Astronomical Clock, Týn Church, stunning architecture without the midday mob.
03 Vyšehrad Fortress — peaceful hilltop citadel with panoramic Vltava views, a gorgeous cemetery, and almost no tourists.
Overrated
01 Charles Bridge at midday — wall-to-wall tourists and vendors. Go before 7am instead.
02 Astronomical Clock show — the hourly animation is underwhelming and draws a crushing crowd.
03 Overpriced Old Town restaurants — touristy spots on the square charge double. Walk 5 min to Lokál or Kantýna.

Safety
Extremely Safe
One of world's safest cities. See map below.
Safety map — areas to watch
Praterstern station — avoid late night
Karlsplatz — pickpockets by day, drug scene after dark
Stephansplatz / Innere Stadt — safe, crowded
Extremely Safe
Ranked the world's safest city by Mercer (2023). Violent crime is virtually nonexistent for tourists.

Praterstern station — drug dealing and gathering spot, especially at night. Fine in daytime; avoid lingering after dark.

Karlsplatz (4th District) — daytime tourist hub near Karlskirche. After dark, the passages attract a drug scene. Stay in well-lit areas.

Stephansplatz / Mariahilfer Straße — crowded shopping zones. Pickpocket risk in crowds, but otherwise very safe.
Metro lines U1 and U3 are pickpocket hotspots during rush hour. Keep bags closed and in front.
Local events during your stay (Jun 17–21)
Ongoing
Wiener Festwochen (ends Jun 21)opportunity
Vienna's premier performing arts festival — theater, dance, music at venues across the city. Great cultural opportunity; some venues may be sold out.
~Jun 19
Schönbrunn Summer Night Concert (free)crowdsopportunity
The Wiener Philharmoniker performs outdoors at Schönbrunn Palace — free and spectacular. Massive crowds (~100K). Arrive very early for a spot or watch from the edges.
Mid-Jun
Vienna Pride / Rainbow Paradecrowds
The 30th Rainbow Parade on the Ringstraße draws 300K+ participants. Expect Ringstraße closures and packed public transit. Plan alternate routes to sights on that day.
Jul 3–5
Donauinselfest (after your stay)
Europe's largest free open-air music fest (3M visitors) is in July this year, not June. No impact on your dates.

Tipping: Service is included in prices by law. Rounding up 5-10% is customary for good service. Say the total amount when paying — don't leave coins on the table. Ignore "tip not included" notes in tourist areas — it's misleading.
Ride-hailing apps
🥇 Uber 🥈 Bolt 🥉 FREE NOW
✅ Uber is the most widely used ride-hailing app. Bolt is often slightly cheaper. FREE NOW aggregates licensed taxis. Vienna's public transport is excellent — you may barely need rides. Lyft is not available.
Don't miss
01 Schönbrunn Palace + Gardens — Empress Sisi's summer residence. The gardens are free; do the Grand Tour of the palace interiors.
02 MuseumsQuartier — one of the world's largest cultural complexes. Leopold Museum (Schiele, Klimt) is a highlight. Great courtyard for lounging.
03 Naschmarkt + Freihausviertel — Vienna's best food market spills into a hip neighborhood with indie cafés and vintage shops.
Overrated
01 Sacher Hotel's Sachertorte — it's fine, but overpriced and the line is brutal. Try Demel or Café Central instead.
02 Fiaker horse carriages — expensive, touristy, and controversial for animal welfare. Walk or take a tram instead.
03 Prater amusement park — the Riesenrad ferris wheel is iconic but the park itself feels like a dated carnival. One ride is enough.

Safety
Safe
Generally safe. See map below.
Safety map — areas to watch
Outer District VIII (Józsefváros) — higher crime after dark
District VII (Jewish Quarter) — rowdy nightlife
Keleti / Nyugati stations — pickpockets
Safe
Budapest's tourist center (Districts I, V, VI) is very well-patrolled. Main risks are pickpockets and taxi scams.

District VIII — Józsefváros (outer parts) — historically the roughest area. The inner/renovated Corvin Quarter is fine, but streets beyond József körút toward Baross utca have higher crime, especially after dark.

District VII — Jewish Quarter — ruin bar district. Safe and fun but rowdy late at night. Watch drinks; avoid isolated side streets after 2am.

Keleti & Nyugati stations — pickpocket hotspots. Don't linger outside the stations, especially at night.
Tram lines 4-6 and metro M3 are prime pickpocket routes. Avoid unlicensed "freelance" yellow taxis — use Bolt or Főtaxi.
Local events during your stay (Jun 21–25)
Jun 12–19
Danube Carnival (tail end)crowdsopportunity
Multicultural folk dance festival at venues across the city (mainly National Museum garden). May still have closing events/gala around Jun 19–21. Street performances downtown — festive, not disruptive.
Jun 21
Night of Museums (Múzeumok Éjszakája)opportunity
Museums stay open late with special programs. A single cheap ticket (~€5) gets you into dozens of museums + special shuttle buses. Highly recommended — perfect for your first evening.
Jun 21
Summer Solstice — longest day
Nearly 16 hours of daylight. The Danube promenade will be lively well past 9pm. Great evening for a walk along the river with views of Parliament lit up.
No closures
No public holidays during your dates
All museums, shops, and attractions operate normal hours. Next holiday is Aug 20 (St. Stephen's Day).

Tipping: 10-15% is standard at restaurants. Check your bill — some places add a service charge (especially in tourist areas). Tip in HUF, not euros. Thermal bath attendants appreciate 500-1000 HUF.
Ride-hailing apps
🥇 Bolt 🥈 Uber 🥉 Főtaxi
✅ Bolt dominates Budapest — fast, cheap, transparent pricing. Uber recently returned and works well. Főtaxi is the main licensed taxi company. Use the BudapestGO app for great public transport. Lyft is not available.
Don't miss
01 Széchenyi Thermal Baths — Europe's largest thermal bath complex. Go in the morning on a weekday. The outdoor pools at sunset are magical.
02 Parliament + Danube night walk — the illuminated Parliament building from the Buda side is one of Europe's greatest views.
03 Ruin bars of District VII — Szimpla Kert pioneered the concept. Go for afternoon drinks; it transforms into a farmer's market on Sundays.
Overrated
01 Fisherman's Bastion — beautiful neo-Gothic terrace but 100% tourist trap. Great for photos; not worth the paid upper level.
02 Danube dinner cruises — mediocre food at premium prices. A simple evening walk along the river is better and free.
03 Gellért Baths (for the price) — gorgeous Art Nouveau building but pricey and often crowded. Rudas or Király offer a more local thermal experience.

Safety
Very Safe
One of Germany's safest large cities. See map below.
Safety map — areas to watch
South of Hauptbahnhof — red-light district, seedy at night
Marienplatz / Altstadt — very safe, crowded
Englischer Garten — safe (dark paths at night)
Very Safe
Munich is one of Germany's safest cities (Numbeo safety index 79). Even "bad" areas would be considered average elsewhere.

South of Hauptbahnhof (main station) — Munich's small red-light district with adult venues and seedy bars. Not dangerous, just unsavory. Avoid wandering the Schillerstraße / Bayerstraße south side alone late at night.

Marienplatz / Viktualienmarkt — tourist center, very safe. Pickpocket risk in crowds but otherwise excellent.

Englischer Garten — safe during the day. Some unlit paths get very dark at night; groups of youngsters occasionally cause issues.
Munich has no real "no-go zones." Coming from San Francisco, you'll likely find it remarkably safe by comparison.
Local events during your stay (Jun 25–30)
Jun 19–Jul 19
Tollwood Summer Festivalcrowdsopportunity
Munich's beloved month-long cultural festival at Olympiapark Süd. Free entry to grounds, 50+ organic food stalls, handicraft market, free circus/theater. Paid concerts include Deep Purple, Brad Paisley, Foreigner. Highly recommended — take U3 to Olympiazentrum.
Jun 20–21
Corso Leopold street festivalcrowdsopportunity
Leopoldstraße in Schwabing becomes car-free for a 1km art, music, and culture promenade. Food, beer garden, street performances. Expect local crowds in the Schwabing area that weekend.
Jun 25–Jul 1
Stadtteilwoche Berg am Laim
Local neighborhood cultural festival with tents, stalls, and events. Not in the tourist center — no disruption, but fun if you wander that way.
Late Jun

Munich's international film festival typically runs late June / early July. Screenings across the city — check program for English-language films.

Ride-hailing apps
🥇 FREE NOW 🥈 Uber 🥉 Bolt
✅ FREE NOW (acquired by Lyft in 2025) is Germany's #1 ride-hailing/taxi app. Uber works well in Munich but operates through licensed partners. Bolt has limited but growing coverage. Munich's S-Bahn/U-Bahn system is superb. Lyft itself is not directly available.
Don't miss
01 English Garden + Eisbach wave — one of the world's largest urban parks. Watch surfers ride a standing wave. Grab a beer at the Chinesischer Turm beer garden.
02 Nymphenburg Palace — stunning baroque palace with parklands that rival Versailles. Far fewer tourists. The Amalienburg hunting lodge is jaw-dropping.
03 Viktualienmarkt — Munich's legendary open-air food market since 1807. Great for lunch, local cheeses, and a beer under the chestnut trees.
Overrated
01 Hofbräuhaus — iconic but touristy and loud. For an authentic beer hall, try Augustiner-Keller or Paulaner am Nockherberg instead.
02 Marienplatz Glockenspiel — the clock show is underwhelming from ground level and draws a huge crowd. Glance at it and move on.
03 Neuschwanstein day trip — beautiful castle but 2+ hours each way, often foggy, and you see the inside for 30 min. If time is limited, skip it.
