Going-to-the-Sun Road & west side hikes
Tuesday, August 4
Glacier NP

Start early (before 7am) to beat Logan Pass parking. The full Going-to-the-Sun Road is open in August and is one of the most scenic drives in America. Enter at West Glacier (25 min from Whitefish).

Trail of the Cedars + Avalanche Lake
5 mi round trip · ~2.5h · 730 ft gain · Easy-moderate. Ancient cedars, turquoise glacial lake surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls. Popular and well-trafficked — low grizzly concern.
🚗
Drive to Logan Pass
Continue up GTTSR to the Continental Divide at 6,646 ft. Stunning alpine views the entire way. Expect traffic — this is peak season.
Hidden Lake Overlook
2.8 mi round trip · ~1.5h · 460 ft gain · Easy. Boardwalk through wildflower meadows from Logan Pass Visitor Center. Mountain goats very common. Views of Bearhat Mountain and Hidden Lake. Very popular, always other hikers around.
🍽
Evening in Whitefish
Try Montana Tap House or Ciao Mambo. Ice cream at Sweet Peaks (get the huckleberry).
3
East side hikes & waterfalls
Wednesday, August 5
Glacier NP

Drive GTTSR to the east side (or take the free park shuttle). The St. Mary side of the park has a drier, more dramatic feel with big open valleys and striking peaks.

St. Mary Falls + Virginia Falls
3.6 mi round trip · ~2h · 525 ft gain · Easy. Two stunning waterfalls through regenerating burn forest. Popular trail, low bear concern. Trailhead on GTTSR.
📸
Sun Point & Wild Goose Island overlook
Short roadside stops on GTTSR. Wild Goose Island is the iconic Glacier photo op. Sun Point has a 10-minute nature walk to lake viewpoints.
Running Eagle Falls (Two Medicine area) — optional
0.6 mi round trip · 15 min · Flat. An unusual waterfall that flows both over and through the rock. Less crowded corner of the park, ~30 min south of St. Mary entrance.
🍽
Dinner in Whitefish
Latitude 48 (craft cocktails + seasonal menu) or the Bulldog Saloon for burgers and live music.
4
Whitewater rafting + Flathead Lake
Thursday, August 6
Adventure

Morning rafting on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, then a relaxed afternoon at Flathead Lake or Whitefish Lake.

🌊
Half-day whitewater rafting — Middle Fork Flathead
Class II-III · ~3-4 hours on water · West Glacier put-in. In early August, flows are moderate — fun rapids without being too intense. 9 named rapids including Bonecrusher and Jaws. Wetsuits, gear, and shuttle included. Book in advance.

Recommended outfitters: Glacier Raft Company (since 1976, voted top 5 in USA Today), Glacier Guides & Montana Raft, Wild River Adventures, or Great Northern Resort. ~$70–100/person for half day.
🏖
Afternoon: Whitefish Lake or Flathead Lake
Whitefish City Beach is walkable from downtown. Flathead Lake (30 min south) is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi — stunning clarity, great for swimming. Wayfarers State Park or Somers Beach are good access points.
5
Huckleberry Days + drive to Missoula
Friday, August 7
Drive day
🫐
Huckleberry Days Arts Festival — opening day!
August 7–9, 2026 at Depot Park in downtown Whitefish. 100+ artists, food vendors, free huckleberry ice cream at Glacier Bank, live music, bake-off, living statues. Free admission. The festival runs 10am–6pm. Spend the morning browsing before you hit the road.
🚗

6
Missoula trails, rafting & town
Saturday, August 8
Explore
🧺
Missoula Farmers Market — Saturday morning
8am–12:30pm at the north end of Higgins Avenue downtown. Nearly 100 vendors — fresh berries, local cheese, baked goods, coffee. The People's Market (crafts) runs simultaneously at Pine & Higgins. A Missoula tradition since 1972.
Rattlesnake Creek trail
4 mi out-and-back · ~1.5h · Flat/easy. Shaded creekside walk in the Rattlesnake Wilderness Area. Despite the name, no rattlesnakes — named for the creek's winding shape. Trailhead 10 min from downtown. Popular with joggers and dog-walkers.
🌊
Option A: Clark Fork / Alberton Gorge rafting
Class II-III · Half or full day · Put-in ~30 min west of Missoula off I-90. Warmer water than the Flathead (62–68°F in August). Sandy beaches, cliff jumping spots, great scenery. CDA Adventures, Wiley E. Waters, or ROW Adventure Center. ~$85–120/person.
🍺
Option B: Missoula brewery crawl
If you prefer a chill afternoon: KettleHouse Brewing (Coldsmoke Scotch Ale), Draught Works, Big Sky Brewing, Bayern Brewing (German-style). All walkable or a short Uber apart. Pair with the Carousel for Missoula — a hand-carved carousel downtown.
7
Depart from Missoula
Sunday, August 9
Travel

Morning options depending on your flight time:

Morning: the "M" trail or Kim Williams trail
The "M" trail: 1.5 mi round trip, ~45 min, steep but short — panoramic views of Missoula and the five valleys. Kim Williams trail: flat riverside walk along the Clark Fork, as long or short as you like.
Fly Missoula (MSO) → SFO
United nonstop, ~2h 25m. Note: United's MSO–SFO nonstop runs limited days per week (often Saturday only). If the Sunday schedule doesn't work, fly MSO → Denver → SFO (easy connection, multiple daily flights), or adjust the trip to depart Saturday evening instead. Check schedules when booking.

Add a Flathead Lake + Many Glacier extension to your trip

Flathead Lake day
Sunday, August 9 (extended)
Extension

Instead of flying home, stay in Missoula and take a day trip south to Flathead Lake, or relocate up to Polson/Bigfork on the lake.

🏖
Flathead Lake — kayaking, swimming, cherry orchards
Rent kayaks at Bigfork. Visit Flathead Lake cherry farms (still in season early August). Drive the east shore for views. Wild Horse Island State Park is accessible by boat — home to bighorn sheep, wild horses, and osprey.
🍒
Bigfork village
Charming lakeside town with galleries, restaurants, and a summer playhouse. Showthyme restaurant is a local favorite. Summer repertory theater runs through August.
8–9
Many Glacier — the wild heart of the park
Monday–Tuesday, August 10–11
Extension

Drive from Flathead Lake/Bigfork to Many Glacier (~3h via US-89 through the Blackfeet reservation). This is the most spectacular valley in Glacier — towering peaks, turquoise lakes, and the best wildlife viewing. Stay at Many Glacier Hotel (historic lodge on Swiftcurrent Lake) or Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

Grinnell Lake (boat + hike combo)
Take the Glacier Park Boat Company's historic boats across Swiftcurrent & Josephine Lakes, then hike ~1.5 mi to Grinnell Lake. Total ~3h with boat rides. Turquoise glacial water. Book boat tickets far in advance.

Wednesday, August 12
Travel

Drive Many Glacier → Kalispell (~2.5h via Babb and US-2). Return rental car at FCA. Fly FCA → SFO (United nonstop, ~2h 40m). This version avoids the MSO return flight scheduling issue entirely since FCA has more SFO flight options.

Inside Glacier NP Lakefront Historic 1915 lodge Dining room No TV, no WiFi (good thing)

~$250–400/night (book via Xanterra)

Alternative

Swiftcurrent Motor Inn — Simpler cabins & motel rooms in the same valley. More affordable, same trailhead access.
