⚠ FCA Airport runway closure — July 2026: Glacier Park International Airport is undergoing runway rehabilitation in July 2026 with phased weekday closures. Flights operate normally every weekend (Fri–Mon). Your Monday Aug 3 arrival should be fine, but verify your specific flight isn't affected by lingering work.
🅿 New for 2026 — Logan Pass 3-hour parking limit + shuttle: Starting July 1, parking at Logan Pass is limited to 3 hours. For longer hikes from Logan Pass (Highline Trail, etc.), you must take the new reservation-only shuttle from Apgar Transit Center (west) or St. Mary Visitor Center (east). Book shuttle tickets on Recreation.gov — a portion released 60 days in advance, the rest at 7pm MDT the evening before.
✓ No vehicle reservation required in 2026: The vehicle reservation system has been dropped. You can drive into the park at any time — no advance entry ticket needed. However, popular areas (Logan Pass, Many Glacier) may temporarily close when at capacity. Arrive early.

Weather — early August in Glacier country

Logan Pass (6,646 ft)

Wildfire smoke: August is the start of fire season. Some years are pristine; others have multi-day smoke events that reduce visibility and air quality. Check AirNow.gov daily. Mornings are typically clearer. Pack N95 masks as backup.

Going-to-the-Sun Road transfer to the east side
Thursday, August 6
Transfer
🚗 Whitefish → Babb via Going-to-the-Sun Rd: 80 mi · ~2.5–3h with stops

This is one of the best days of the trip. You'll drive the full Going-to-the-Sun Road from west to east — 50 miles of the most spectacular mountain road in America. Leave by 8am to beat traffic. This isn't a "driving day" — it's a highlight.

📸
Scenic stops along Going-to-the-Sun Road
Lake McDonald: Stop at the lodge for a few minutes — gorgeous lakefront. The Loop: Hairpin turn with mountain views. Bird Woman Falls overlook: Massive waterfall visible from the road. Logan Pass: Quick stop at the visitor center (3-hour parking limit). Jackson Glacier overlook: One of the park's few remaining glaciers visible from the road. Sun Point: 10-minute walk to a stunning lake viewpoint. Wild Goose Island: The iconic Glacier photo — tiny island in St. Mary Lake with peaks behind.
St. Mary Falls + Virginia Falls (east side of Sun Road)
3.6 mi round trip · ~2h · 525 ft gain · Easy. Two stunning waterfalls through regenerating forest. Trailhead is along Going-to-the-Sun Road east of Logan Pass. Popular trail, low bear concern.
🏘
Arrive in Babb, check in
Exit the park at St. Mary, drive 12 miles north on Hwy 89 to Babb. Dinner at Two Sisters Cafe (locally loved, closes at 9pm) or Cattle Baron Supper Club.
5
Many Glacier — the crown jewel
Friday, August 7
Many Glacier
🚗 Babb → Many Glacier entrance: 12 mi · 30–40 min (rough road, slow)

Many Glacier is the most spectacular valley in the park — towering peaks, turquoise lakes, and the best wildlife viewing in Glacier. Arrive early (before 8am) as parking fills fast and the area may temporarily close at capacity. The road from Babb is paved but rough and potholed — drive carefully.

Boat + hike combo to Grinnell Lake
Take Glacier Park Boat Company's historic launches across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine, then hike ~1.6 mi to Grinnell Lake. Total ~3h including boat rides. Stunning turquoise glacial water below Grinnell Glacier. Book boat tickets far in advance on glacierparkboats.com — they sell out daily.
🐻
Wildlife watching
Many Glacier has the park's densest bear population. Grizzlies are frequently visible on the hillsides above Swiftcurrent Lake, especially in the early morning and evening. Mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, and marmots are common. Bring binoculars. Stay on trails, keep distance.
Redrock Falls via Swiftcurrent Pass trail
4.2 mi round trip · ~2h · 285 ft gain · Easy. Passes Fishercap Lake (moose at dawn!) and Redrock Lake before ending at a pretty waterfall. Well-trafficked, good trail.
🍽
Sunset from Many Glacier Hotel veranda
Even though you're not staying here, anyone can walk into the lobby and sit on the veranda with a drink. Watch alpenglow hit Grinnell Point and Mt. Gould across Swiftcurrent Lake. One of the most beautiful settings in any national park.
6
Two Medicine — the quiet side
Saturday, August 8
Two Medicine
🚗 Babb → Two Medicine: ~50 mi · 1h via Hwy 89 south + Hwy 49

Two Medicine is Glacier's most underrated area — dramatic peaks, fewer crowds, and a very different feel from the busy west side. The drive south on Hwy 89 along the Rocky Mountain Front is gorgeous — open prairie to the east, the wall of mountains to the west. You'll cross the Blackfeet reservation.

🚗
Drive the Looking Glass Highway (Hwy 49)
The connecting road between Hwy 89 and Two Medicine. Stunning views into the Two Medicine valley. Free-range cattle and horses on the road (Blackfeet reservation land) — drive slow.
Running Eagle Falls (Trick Falls)
0.6 mi round trip · 15 min · Flat. An unusual waterfall that flows both over and through the rock. In August you can see both the upper and lower falls. Short walk from the parking area.
Two Medicine Lake boat tour + hike to Twin Falls
Historic boat "Sinopah" crosses Two Medicine Lake (~45 min round trip), with option to hike to Twin Falls from the far shore (~1.8 mi round trip from the boat dock, ~1h). Dramatic mountain backdrop. Far fewer crowds than Many Glacier boats.
South Shore Trail along Two Medicine Lake
Up to 7 mi one-way but walk as far as you like. Flat lakeside trail with mountain reflections. Turn back whenever you want — even 30 minutes is rewarding.
🍽
Stop in East Glacier on the way back
Walk through the lobby of Glacier Park Lodge to see the massive Douglas Fir pillars. Grab dinner at Serrano's Mexican Restaurant (local favorite, cash only) or the lodge dining room. Drive back to Babb (~1h) in the golden evening light along the mountain front.
7
Return to Kalispell & fly home
Sunday, August 9
Travel
🚗 Babb → Kalispell FCA: ~100 mi · 2h via Hwy 89 south + Hwy 2 west

The drive back to the airport goes along the southern boundary of the park on Highway 2 — a beautiful road through the Middle Fork Flathead River valley. You'll pass through East Glacier and over Marias Pass (5,220 ft, the lowest Continental Divide crossing in the northern Rockies).

📸
Scenic stops on the return drive
Marias Pass: Quick pullout at the Continental Divide marker and the Teddy Roosevelt obelisk. Goat Lick overlook: A natural mineral lick on a cliff above the Middle Fork Flathead — mountain goats frequently visible on the cliffs (best in spring, but sometimes present in August). Essex area: Beautiful river valley views.
Fly Kalispell (FCA) → SFO
Return rental car at FCA. United nonstop, ~2h 40m. Check flight schedule — FCA has limited nonstop options per week. A Denver connection is a solid backup.
